City Club Owners Buy St. Thomas Preservation Hall

By Cece Nunn, posted Sep 9, 2014
The owners of City Club have bought another historic downtown Wilmington landmark, they announced Tuesday.

Jonathan Weiss and David Topping bought St. Thomas Preservation Hall, an event center at 208 Dock St., through their holding company, TopWeiss, for an undisclosed figure, according to a news release.

TopWeiss also owns the deRosset House at 23 S. 2nd St., home to The City Club of Wilmington, a private dining and social club as well as an event and wedding venue.

According to New Hanover County property tax records, TopWeiss bought 23 S. 2nd St. for a little over $1.4 million in 2007 from Classic Inns of America Inc.

City Club’s new general manager, Poppy Tugwell, will continue to run St. Thomas Preservation Hall as an event and wedding venue.

"David and I are thrilled about the latest addition to our portfolio. The City Club and St. Thomas were both built in the 1840's, and we were in dire need of a large event venue ... it seemed like a perfect fit,” Weiss said.

He said with the recent addition of many more hotel rooms "historic downtown Wilmington has become the perfect location to host a wedding.”

In 2008, St. Thomas Preservation Hall was acquired by The Promise Foundation, a nonprofit, 501(c)3 entity with the mission of providing “financial assistance to improve the health, education and welfare of neglected and abused children in the southeastern North Carolina region. Rental proceeds earned by Saint Thomas benefit The Promise Foundation’s mission,” the preservation hall’s website said.

In addition to owning the city landmarks, Weiss and Topping are partnered in several successful multi-family apartment complexes, the news release said.
