Wireless Provider To Build New Store In Midtown

By J. Elias O'Neal, posted Oct 21, 2013

Capitalizing on continued growth in the midtown area, U.S. Cellular has submitted preliminary site plans with Wilmington development officials for a new store.

The Chicago-based national cell phone retailer is planning to build on a 0.56-acre lot in the Village at College and Oleander development, located near the intersection of Oleander Drive and South College Road.

Plans were submitted Oct. 16.

Officials with Wilmington-based Cameron Management Inc. are currently leasing 12,000 square feet of retail space in phase two of the development at the busy intersection, which includes two outparcels fronting South College Road and Oleander Drive.

A new Dunkin’ Donuts is slated for the 0.69-acre parcel fronting Oleander Drive, while U.S. Cellular will occupy the South College Road outparcel.

Plans call for the 3,150-square-foot U.S. Cellular store to rise at 1418 S. College Road, according to plans submitted to the city.

Hill Rogers, broker-in-charge with Cameron Management Inc. that’s overseeing tenancy for the development, said Monday that officials hope to break ground on the new U.S. Cellular location before the end of the year.

The city planning division’s technical review committee is reviewing the plans.

U.S. Cellular is the fifth-largest telecommunications network in the country and operates in more than 26 states.
