The Wilmington International Airport has awarded a second contract in its $60 million terminal expansion project.
A $9.2 million contract was awarded to Wilmington-headquartered Monteith Construction Corp. for the second phase of the improvements project, Granseur Dick, the airport’s planning and development director, said in an email Wednesday.
Bid proposals came in on a rebid process, which was held Feb. 5. That resulted in two responses, Dick said. Group III Management Inc., out of Kinston, also put in a bid at nearly $10 million, according to bid documents.
The New Hanover County Airport Authority approved the contract award to Monteith Construction at its meeting last week, Dick said.
This is the second contract awarded to the local construction firm for ILM's terminal expansion and renovation project, which involves making upgrades and expanding ILM's existing terminal.
Monteith Construction was also awarded a $1.8 million contract for the
initial part of ILM's expansion.
The first phase is still ongoing, with completion expected by the end of March, Dick said. That project began last October and involves reconfiguring the TSA baggage handling areas to make space for work in the upcoming phase.
Construction in the second phase is slated to get underway in April. That work will expand the terminal building to provide new airline ticket offices and expand the airport’s ticket lobby.
The total work is slated to place over three separate contracts, with construction anticipated to last until 2022.
ILM officials have said the expansion will improve ILM's ability to
handle more travelers through the airport, which saw a record of more than 934,000 passengers in 2018.
“We’re excited to begin this next step in our expansion allowing us to meet the needs of our growing community and traveling public,” Dick said.
