Hendrick Automotive Group bought nearly 14 acres of unused land on Market Street last week from Cameron Company LLC for more than $4.57 million.

Part of the land, at 6720 Market St., is currently being used for a temporary emergency services facility for New Hanover Regional Medical Center.

Hendrick officials did not have a comment on the transaction or potential plans for the property Tuesday.

The purchase comes about four months after Hendrick and Stevenson Honda of Wilmington announced that Charlotte-based Hendrick Automotive Group, one of the largest privately held car sales companies in the U.S., had entered into a partnership to operate Stevenson Honda as Stevenson-Hendrick Honda, a dealership at 821 S. College Road.

The June announcement about Stevenson stated that in addition to Stevenson-Hendrick Honda, Hendrick Automotive Group also operates at least two other franchises in Wilmington -- Jeff Gordon Chevrolet and Hendrick Toyota Wilmington.

In the 6720 Market St. transaction, Hill Rogers and Bryan Greene of Cameron Management represented Cameron Company LLC.

Hendrick has 96 dealerships from the Carolinas to California, and the company employs more than 10,000 people in its dealerships, collision centers and accessories distributor installers in 14 states.
