A nationwide salon studios chain and a boutique with locations in 22 states are coming to Mayfaire Town Center.

Wilmington franchisee Blair Kutrow is opening a second location of Sola Salon Studios at the end of the new block of Mayfaire buildings on Town Center Drive that are anchored by H&M, a clothing chain that opened its Wilmington location in February.

The 5,600-square-foot Sola Salon Studios at Hanover Center opened in 2014 and includes 28 studios that hair stylists, nail technicians and aestheticians lease for their businesses. The Mayfaire location will be 6,000 square feet with 30 studios and 34 chairs, Kutrow said. General contractor Jasper Newman of Newman Bros., who was general contractor for the Sola Salon Studios at Hanover Center, is in charge of the upfit at Mayfaire.

“We plan to open at the end of June, and some people are going to move from Hanover to over there. I’ve got some people already signed up to go to Mayfaire,” Kutrow said. “I always have interest. I get calls pretty much every day” from people interested in opening their salon in Sola.

Explaining how Sola Salon Studios works, Kutrow said, “My customer is the stylist. The idea behind what we do is we give beauty professionals the ability to own their own salon without all the hassles.”

Kutrow has a background in business – she spent 25 years in the wireless and telecommunications world. Born in Wilmington, she moved back to the Port City in 2012 to help her sister start a pediatric occupational therapy practice before Kutrow became a Sola franchisee in 2013.

“We’re in almost every state, and we just sold our first franchise in Canada. So there’s over 7,000 stylists in the Sola world and that means we’re able to offer perks” such as educational seminars and an app that can handle the tasks of scheduling, payments and reporting, Kutrow said.

“It’s really rewarding helping people and often women – it’s a very female-dominated industry – start their own businesses,” Kutrow said.

Also at Mayfaire Town Center, a new long-term occupant is coming to the space that once held Coldwater Creek, which closed in 2014 after the company declared bankruptcy.

Altar’d State, a store that sells women’s clothing, accessories and gifts, is expected to open this spring, according to signs on the building.

Founded in 2009, Altar’d State has more than 70 stores in 22 states, the company's website states. The first Altar'd State opened where the company is headquartered, Knoxville, Tennessee, as a modern Christian retail store and coffee shop, according to the website.
