PetSmart joins Dick’s Sporting Goods and Marshalls on the list of stores coming to Mayfaire’s Community Center.

But unlike Dick’s and Marshalls, which will close their existing stores in Wilmington, PetSmart plans to keep its New Centre Drive location open, said Sue Rice, Mayfaire director of operations.

The new PetSmart will be located in a 12,000-square-foot portion of the center on which construction has not yet started. Dick’s, now at 816 South College Road, will open a 50,000-square-foot store, and Marshalls, now in the same retail center as Wilmington’s existing PetSmart, New Centre Market, will occupy 24,000 square feet.

Dick’s and Marshalls are scheduled to open in September while the new PetSmart is expected to open around the middle of 2015, Rice said.

PetSmart, according to the company’s website, employs about 53,000 people and operates 1,340 pet stores in the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico. The company’s first two stores, originally called PetFood Warehouse, opened in 1987 in Arizona.

The Mayfaire Community Center is south of the Mayfaire Town Center inside the 400-acre master planned Mayfaire development created by Wilmington-based Zimmer Development Co. and Greenville-based BrodyCo. Inc. The Community Center already includes Harris Teeter and restaurants such as Panera Bread, Ruby Tuesday and Chick-fil-A.

Meanwhile, down the road in Mayfaire Town Center, Chipotle Mexican Grill will install a second location inside the building that used to house Mama Fu’s at the center’s Military Cutoff Road and Main Street entrance. The new Chipotle is expected to open in late 2014, Rice said.

Chipotle will not occupy the entire Mama Fu's building. Some space is still available for lease, Rice said.
