Nearly $5,700 Still Needed To Help Downtown Group Move Concerts

By Cece Nunn, posted May 11, 2015
Time is running out for a fundraising campaign begun to help with the cost of moving a free summer concert series from one part of downtown Wilmington to another.

Produced by Wilmington Downtown Inc., the Downtown Sundown Concert Series begins its 10th year May 22 at its traditional location, Riverfront Park, according to WDI. But because of city construction work that’s expected to start later during the summer, the series will have to move to a private parking lot at the corner of Princess and Water streets to finish its run this year through Sept. 4.

WDI, a nonprofit organization, began a fundraising campaign on Kickstarter.com earlier this year to offset the cost of renting the parking lot for the concert series, now needed for part of the 2015 series and the beginning of the 2016 series because the construction work will still be under way, according to WDI newsletters.

“Although volunteers looked at over a dozen sites, only one gives patrons a vista to the river, proximity to dozens of nearby pubs and shops, access to public parking and minimizes disruptions to nearby residents, businesses and office workers,” the Kickstarter page says. “To use this location, however, we will have to pay just over $9,000 to rent the space. This new expense is too much for our nonprofit to absorb without new fees or price increases.”

As of about 3 p.m. Monday, the Kickstarter campaign for the concert series had raised $3,302 from 70 backers, the website said. But WDI will be able to use the money raised so far only if the total of $9,000 is pledged by 9 p.m. Wednesday, according to WDI and KickStarter.com.

Outdoor Equipped, a Wilmington-based retailer, is the title sponsor for this year’s Downtown Sundown Concert Series. The concerts are 6 to 10 p.m. Fridays and feature local and touring bands. About 26,000 people attended the concerts last year, according to WDI.
