A foreclosure sale that was scheduled for 11 a.m. Wednesday for a large part of Independence Mall in Wilmington has been postponed to July, an attorney involved in the proceedings said Monday. 

Andrew McVey, substitute trustee and an attorney with Wilmington law firm Murchison, Taylor & Gibson, said the new date for the sale will be July 12 at the New Hanover County Courthouse, 316 Princess St.  

Foreclosure proceedings for the mall at 3500 Oleander Drive began after Centro Independence LLC, owner of part of the mall property, defaulted on a $110 million J.P. Morgan loan in 2014. As a result of its default status, the loan was moved to a special servicer in October 2014.

The special servicer has been in discussions about a potential loan modification with Centro Independence this year, according to recent reports from companies that analyze commercial loans. 

Almost 500,000 square feet of the mall, a portion that includes JCPenney, serves as collateral for the loan. While JCPenney leases its space, the mall's other anchor tentants, Dillard's, Belk and Sears, own their portions of the mall.

The foreclosure sale postponement to July 12, the eighth new date since a sale was scheduled for May 29 last year, is a result of a request by J.P. Morgan, McVey said.

The latest change might not be the last. McVey said there's always the possibility of more postponements.
