After years of laying the groundwork for a brewery business that employs gang members, Wilmington-based TRU Colors plans to launch its first beer this month.
TRU Light is slated to be available in North Carolina stores on July 12, according to a
Facebook post on the company's page this week.
A company spokesperson said Thursday that there was no comment at this time, and that further details would be released at a later date.
The Facebook post included a short video with the new branded cans and boxes of TRU Light, a lager.
TRU Colors is a for-profit company that hires Wilmington gang members to develop their leadership skills and promote their personal and professional growth, as well as help run the brewery business. The idea behind the business is to employ gang members to help address gang-related violence in Wilmington.
The release of the first beer from the brewery is a milestone for TRU Colors, which has been working since 2017 to bring in investors, build its employee base of gang members, refine its social mission and establish its brewery, located at TRU Colors' headquarters at 715 Greenfield St.
TRU Colors, headed up by George Taylor, announced this year
a strategic partnership with Chicago-based Molson Coors to help launch its first round of beer this summer. TRU Colors will be distributing its beer exclusively through Molson Coors' network of distributors.
TRU Colors' 56,000-square-foot headquarters on Greenfield Street holds its corporate offices and brewery and will feature a wellness center, gym, recording studio, classrooms for education and coaching and a designated space for the “street intervention team," Taylor has said.
The brewery is capable of producing over 1 million cases per year, officials have said.
While the social media announcement this week said that the company plans to distribute in North Carolina, other announcements previously have said TRU Colors also plans to distribute its beer in Virginia, and eventually, all 50 states within its first 24 months of operation.
