Atlantic Packaging has plans to build a new, modern addition to its headquarters in Wilmington.

The company has submitted plans to the city of Wilmington's Technical Review Committee (TRC) for an expansion of its current facility at 806 N. 23rd St., according to city documents. TRC is scheduled to review the proposal at its June 14 meeting.

Rusty Carter, CEO of Atlantic Packaging, said Monday that the company located to the 23rd Street location back in the early 1980s and has “grown significantly” over the years. Now, Atlantic Packaging wants to grow its footprint at its more than 13-acre Wilmington site to make room for its current employees and potentially some new hires, he said.

There has been “a lot of expansion in a lot of different areas, and we have never really expanded our corporate administrative offices, physically,” he said.

Its corporate headquarters in Wilmington holds accounting and finance executive leadership, among other personnel, he said. The company has 1,000 employees companywide with about 80 in Wilmington.

Plans are to demolish a portion of the existing building that faces 23rd Street and add a two-story, 15,000-square-foot space as well as street-side parking, Carter said. The company now has 10,000 square feet of office space and 130,000 square feet of warehouse space at the site.

Atlantic Packaging also plans on upgrading its fitness facility and training facilitates as well, Carter said.

Designs for the headquarters addition pull from some of the modern elements used in Atlantic Packaging's new packaging solutions center in south Charlotte, Carter said. The Charlotte facility opened in August.

If the project gets all the necessary approvals, construction is slated to begin late summer or early fall, Carter said, and is expected to take about 8 to 10 months to complete.
