To mark Cyber Security Awareness Month, Cape Fear Community College has summoned its relevant resources to help the public learn how to keep online information safe. Thursday, the college will host a free daylong event with practical advice from cyber security professionals, according to a news release from CFCC on Tuesday.
Keeping personal information secure as increasing amounts of sensitive information are stored remotely in "the cloud" is a top priority for cyber security experts and everyday users, the release stated.
CFCC's Cyber Security Day will take place 9 a.m.-4 p.m. in the McKeithan Center at CFCC's North Campus in Castle Hayne. On hand will be CFCC faculty and staff members who specialize in computer technology. Interactive seminars are scheduled throughout the day led by those experts, Melissa Watson, chairwoman of CFCC's business technologies department, said in the release.
"We hope the public will take advantage of the wealth of information that our instructors, staff and students can provide," Watson added.
Watson said the event also gives CFCC technology students "an opportunity to apply the knowledge they've learned in the classroom."
Morning sessions will feature presentations from instructors in CFCC's computer technology integration program and staff who work in the college's information technology department. Topics, according to the release, include best practices to prevent online security breaches for individuals and small businesses, as well as issues related to wireless security and mobile security.
Between 2 and 4 p.m. there will be a hands-on clinic to which visitors can bring their laptops and mobile devices to get a free cyber-security consultation from instructors and students.
