People who drive along Market Street east of Eastwood Road have seen a sign on the former Stevenson Suzuki lot proclaiming that “something big” is coming.

That “something big” at 5911 Market St. means more used cars to meet demand, according to Stevenson general manager Patrick Koballa. He said the site has become home to a stand-alone pre-owned car facility, one section of which will be devoted to certified pre-owned Hondas. The former Suzuki building is being renovated according to Honda specifications to house sales and financing functions for the new operation.

“Suzuki pulled out of the U.S. car market, and we have worked with Honda over the last six months and finally got approval to put a satellite Honda used car facility at that location,” he said. “It is one of the few remotely located, stand-alone franchised used car operations in the United States.”

While the location is open for business, construction is underway to renovate the former Suzuki sales facility to meet Honda’s “specifications and guidelines,” Koballa said.

The renovated building should be ready in 60-90 days, Koballa said, and will house sales and financing operations. In addition to featuring certified pre-owned Hondas in one designated section, the lot will contain a variety of other used cars. While not all of those will be certified, most will carry Stevenson’s lifetime warranty, Koballa said.

“There is a large demand for certified used cars in general, especially Hondas,” he said, explaining that space for used cars on the lot at Stevenson Honda’s South College Road facility is limited and cannot accommodate the inventory needed to meet demand.

Stevenson, in Wilmington since 1992, operates five dealerships, each with its own location. In addition to the new pre-owned Honda dealership and the original Honda dealership, the company has franchises for Kia, Acura and Mazda.
