Weekend Chock Full Of Fun

By JP Finlay, posted Nov 11, 2010

This weekend figures to be one of the busiest the Wilmington area sees this year. The convergence of the PPD Beach to Battleship Triathlon and the Cucalorus Film Festival brings many visitors to town, but other activities throughout the tri-county area will attract a crowd.

The largest of all the events is the triathlon, with 1,500 participants and thousands of spectators, that will block roads and reroute traffic throughout the area Saturday morning. While not all residents are capable of the 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike ride and the 26.2 mile run, all are encouraged to support the athletes along the race course.

For those that would rather sit than sweat, Cucalorus will show more than 150 films between today and Sunday. The film festival, in its 16th year, has feature films from all over the world and celebrates independent filmmakers. Ticket and party packages are available for sale, with bars, restaurants and other downtown locations serving as the launching point for the film fest.

If a Cucalorus-goer lists “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” as a favorite, perhaps a visit to the Cape Fear Wedding Show on Sunday would pique their interest. The event will be the first held at the brand new Wilmington Convention Center, and between noon and 4 p.m. vendors will showcase wedding dresses, wedding cakes, wedding flowers and anything else imaginable related to weddings.

And for those that don’t want to run, bike, or swim, watch a movie or direct a movie, plan a wedding, get married or eat wedding cake, the Willie Stargell Foundation invites golfers to the Country Club of Landfall for the Eight Annual Willie Stargell Celebrity Golf Tournament Friday through Sunday. Retired Major League Baseball Hall of Famers Eddie Murray and Joe Morgan are scheduled to play, and the tournament will raise money for research and awareness of kidney disease.

If none of this is interesting, perhaps relaxing is the best course for the weekend. The holidays are just around the corner.
