New Yoga Studio Targets Summer Opening Date

By Jamaal O'Neal, posted Apr 19, 2012

A new hot yoga studio could be serving up stretches and relaxation to midtown residents by June.

Bikram Yoga is setting up shop in more than 3,800 square feet of space in the Willow Woods Shopping Center, located at 5424 Oleander Drive.

Chuck Lydon and W. Tyler Pegg of Coldwell Banker Commercial Sun Coast Partners represented the tenant, while Mike Brown and Bryan J. Greene of Cape Fear Commercial represented the landlord after executing a long-term lease in March on the property for an undisclosed amount.

Barbara Ebert, owner and Bikram Yoga instructor, said her studio practices 26 postures and two breathing exercises in a room with a temperature set at 105 degrees and 45 percent humidity.

Baltimore native Barbara and her husband, Henry, originally didn’t have Wilmington on their radar -- that is, until they stumbled through the Port City on their way back to Baltimore from scouting possible yoga studio locales in Florida.

“I was having car troubles, so we were trying to find a repair shop and ended up in Wilmington,” Barbara said. “As my husband and I were driving through the city we just fell in love the area.”

Their plans changed, and after a yearlong search and market analysis of the city, they decided that Wilmington -- and not Florida -- was where they wanted to open their new studio.

“We moved here two months ago permanently,” Barbara Ebert said. “We really love it here."
