UNCW Recognized In Business Publication

By Staff Reports, posted May 18, 2010

University Business magazine’s Models of Efficiency program has selected the University of North Carolina Wilmington as a model for innovation and efficiency. UNCW is one of seven colleges and universities in the United States identified for its new approaches for streamlining operations and service delivery to students in less time and at lower cost.

“We launched Models of Efficiency to honor those colleges and universities that are applying the same kind of innovation and dedication to service that we’re seeing from leading-edge companies in the private sector,” said Tim Goral, editor-in-chief of University Business in a press release. “UNC Wilmington’s innovation really stands out because it succeeded on a quantitative and qualitative level.”

The UNCW Information Technology Systems Division and Graduate School implemented a Perceptive Software imaging system to streamline the prospective student application process.

The Graduate School has saved $4,500 in photocopying costs during the past two years and has eliminated the need to store paper files. It has enabled the school to install two computer stations for work-study students.

“We’re delighted to be recognized for our model of efficiency and proud of this innovation,” said Leah Kraus, associate vice chancellor for the Information Technology Systems Division, in a press release.

Kraus said the new applications process has contributed to a 30 percent increase in graduate applications in 2008, a 40 percent increase in 2009 and a 30 percent bump in enrollment, without additional staffing.

Other honorees include: Central Methodist University, University of St. Francis, Wentworth Institute of Technology, The University of the Arts, University of Nevada Las Vegas and California Polytechnic State University.

University Business is a publication for senior managers at colleges and universities in the United States. It reaches about 46,000 executives who manage offices like enrollment, technology, facilities and academic affairs.
