Tomsic Leads New Wilmington Chamber Board

By Alison Lee Satake, posted Jan 5, 2010

The president of Wachovia Bank’s Wilmington market will lead the Greater Wilmington Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors in 2010. Randy Tomsic first served on the chamber board from 1996 to 1999. He returned to the board in 2006 and most recently served as the First Vice Chairman last year.

“I saw a need for our business leaders in this community to become very active in different community organizations,”  Tomsic said about his reason for returning to the board. In 2008, he helped raise $450,000 as the annual campaign chairman.

Tomsic’s 2010 leadership team consists of Jack Barto, CEO  of New Hanover Regional Medical Center, who will serve as first vice chair/chairman elect and Emily Longley, president of Longley Supply Co., who will serve as second vice chairwoman.

Two new members - Debbie Elliott, president of Talk Inc. and Bobby Rippy of Jungle Rapids will join the Chamber of Commerce board this year.

Tomsic succeeds 2009 chairman Vinton Fountain of Fountain Financial Associates. Tomsic is a graduate of East Carolina University and joined Wachovia Bank in 1981. He is also a 2006 graduate of Leadership Wilmington.

He has served on the steering committee for Cape Fear Future since 2008, in which the committee selected three priority areas from a list of 42 draft recommendations. Branding and marketing the region to attract and retain “knowledge sector” workers, improving K-12 education with a focus on science, technology, engineering and math and entrepreneurship are the three areas the initiative will focus on.

“We’ll start seeing and hearing these action items in 2010,” Tomsic said.
