A decade after shoppers first walked inside its retail shops, Mayfaire continues to grow.

This summer, Mayfaire developers bought 40.41 acres of undeveloped land at 1105 Eastwood Road for $5.75 million from Hardy R. Parker Jr. and others, in a transaction that closed June 26, according to New Hanover County property tax records.

“We are in the preliminary planning phases” to find the best use for the newly acquired land, Hyman Brody, the Greenville-based co-developer of Mayfaire Town Center, said Friday. Mayfaire Town Center is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year.
 
“The benefit now is we know how well Mayfaire has been received in the marketplace,” Brody said. “We can use that knowledge to better help us bring another first-class addition to Mayfaire and the surrounding neighborhood.”

The 40 acres of land, adjacent to homes and behind St. Mark Catholic Church on Eastwood Road, is currently zoned for residential purposes, according to property tax records, and the city of Wilmington had not received any rezoning applications for the property address as of Friday afternoon, said Kathryn Thurston, associate city planner.

In the fall, construction is expected to begin on more retail space, including 12,000 square feet that will house a new PetSmart pet food and supply store at Mayfaire Community Center, where a Dick’s Sporting Goods store is scheduled to open in September.

Marshall’s is moving from New Centre Drive to Mayfaire Community Center and is expected to welcome shoppers about two to three weeks after Dick’s opens. The community center portion of Mayfaire is another component of the mixed-use development. More than a year ago, developers announced plans to add more retail space to sites already within Mayfaire Town Center.
