Curtis Media Group, a Raleigh-based broadcasting company, recently closed on a $1.75 million deal to acquire five radio stations and two translators in and near the Wilmington area, expanding its footprint in coastal North Carolina.
The acquisitions include stations “Modern Rock 98.7,” “Jammin 99.9,” “Sunny 103.7,” “Z107.5,” “ESPN Wilmington” and “95.9 The Breeze.” The stations are located in Jacksonville (98.7 FM), Boiling Spring Lakes (99.9 FM), Southport (107.5 FM), Wrightsville Beach (103.7 FM) and Wilmington (95.9 FM).
The radio stations are part of Sunrise Broadcasting LLC, which is owned by Raleigh-based Capitol Broadcasting Company, the parent company of WRAL-TV. Capitol Broadcasting still owns the local TV station, WILM-TV.
According to Federal Communications Commission filings, Sunrise Broadcasting entered into an asset purchase agreement with Curtis Media Group on April 20.
Curtis Media Group operates 30 full-power stations and 31 translators across North Carolina, according to its website, with existing eastern North Carolina stations including 99.5 FM/97.5 FM “The Wave,” “101.9 KISS FM,” and 106.5 FM “The Best Rock.”
The Wilmington-area stations were previously acquired by Sunrise Broadcasting from NextMedia in 2008 as part of a $12 million deal, according to FCC filings.
Curtis Media Group did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Friday.
