Ports Of Wilmington, Morehead City See Increased Cargo Volumes

By Jenny Callison, posted Mar 29, 2016
The Port of Wilmington continues to see increasing amounts of containerized cargo, according to a news release Tuesday from the N.C. State Ports Authority. February’s totals were nearly 8 percent higher than those of February 2015. January of this year logged container volumes just over 8 percent higher than those of January 2015, the release stated.

“Last year we broke the Authority record in terms of TEUs moved due to a number of new services, diversions and our lack of congestion,” Ports Authority CEO Paul Cozza said in the release. “This year we’ve been able to sustain that positive momentum with our best-in-class efficiencies and superior customer service.”

A TEU is a 20-foot equivalent unit, used to measure a ship’s cargo-carrying capacity. One TEU, the size of a standard shipping container, measures 20 feet long by 8 feet high.

In its 2014-2015 fiscal year, the Port of Wilmington showed an 18 percent year-over-year increase in containerized cargo volumes, the release stated, adding that, by container volume growth percentage, North Carolina’s ports are among the fastest growing on the U.S. East Coast.

The Port of Morehead City does not handle container cargo, but it is seeing growth on the general cargo side. Total tonnage is up 19 percent year-over-year through February due to an influx of new accounts, including imported grains, the release stated.

To prepare for higher volumes of container and other types of cargo, the Ports Authority is moving forward with a $100 million investment in infrastructure improvements at both ports, according to the release.

“With new cranes, an enhanced berth, a wider turning basin and further expansion on the way, North Carolina’s Ports will improve upon its operational efficiencies to keep cargo moving and congestion at bay. Specifically, the Port of Wilmington will be prepared to handle post-Panamax vessels up to the 10,000 TEU class by this summer,” the release stated.
