Wilmington’s Laura Wilson and Whiteville’s Jeff Etheridge both were reappointed to the North Carolina Ports Authority Board by the General Assembly this month.
Board Chairman Carl J. Stewart, Jr. also was reappointed by Gov. Bev Perdue this month.
Wilson was appointed in 2004, 2006, 2008 and again this year by N.C. State Sen. Pro-Tem Marc Basnight.
State Sen. Basnight’s communication director Schorr Johnson said in an email that Basnight reappointed Wilson because “He understands she is doing a fine job on the board and expressed interest in continuing to serve.”
Wilson is the former owner of Wilson’s Supermarkets. She is the only woman on the board and one of two members of the board from southeastern North Carolina. Wilson is the mother of Lanny Wilson, who served southeastern North Carolina on the N.C. Board of Transportation for more than nine years. He resigned in January during a probe of former Gov. Mike Easley’s aide’s real estate investments.
Jeff Etheridge, Jr. of Whiteville also was reappointed to the board. Etheridge is the regional president of BB&T Corp. North Carolina. He served as chairman of the Board of Trustees of the University of North Carolina Wilmington and is on that board’s business affairs committee.
“We’re very pleased that Mrs. Wilson was reappointed to the Board last week by Sen. Basnight,” wrote Shannon Moody, ports authority director of communications in an email on Tuesday. “She has been a very active participant in Board activities since her original appointment in 2004. She is the Chairwoman of the Government Relations Committee of the Board. Her experience as a successful business owner and active member of the Wilmington community are significant assets to our Board of Directors.”
The Board meets about once every 60 days, or by call of the chairman or majority of members.
