The town of Leland has reached a settlement arising from a dispute with engineering services firm URS Corp., also known as AECOM, a Fortune 500 company.

URS has agreed to pay the town $75,000 to avoid a lawsuit for the town’s claims regarding faulty construction plans for the Northgate Drive Realignment project. On Tuesday, the town council authorized the town manager to execute the settlement agreement.

Plans for the road project contained “errors and omissions” that the town alleges created construction deficiencies by the project contractor, according to a town memo on the settlement agreement.

The project entailed the construction of a new roadway that realigned Northgate Drive and created a signalized intersection with additional and extended turn lanes on Village Road. Work wrapped on the roughly $3 million project in 2020.

Leland had had a contract with URS for on-call engineering since 2013. AECOM acquired URS in 2014.

An AECOM representative could not be immediately reached for comment. A Leland spokesperson said the town did not have additional comment.
