Dan Camacho
Co-founder,
Java Dog Press

Along with local historian Beverly Tetterton, Dan Camacho started Java Dog Press, which publishes history books and e-books and the Wilmington.tours app. Camacho also serves on the board of the Island Montessori School and recently helped teach an after-school coding class using Google’s CS First tutorials along with MIT’s Scratch coding platform.

He frequently downloads e-books from the New Hanover County public library and N.C. Digital Library.

His latest non-fiction read was What a Plant Knows by Daniel Chamovitz, “which details the surprisingly active senses and lives of the green that surrounds us.”

An avid reader, he prefers “the tactile experience of paper,” but now, with space limitations at home, uses his Kindle Paperwhite to read fiction. He prefers the Paperwhite over a tablet “because it lacks the distractions of email, text and other pop-up notifications.”

Also uses his Paperwhite to keep with news. “The New York Times on the Paperwhite is a deal at $1 a day – especially on Sundays.” Is a fan of innovations in the new Washington Post app, “which costs only $4 a month with an Amazon Prime membership.”

Camacho and his family cut the satellite cord a year ago. They stream the live TV channels they need with Sling TV over Roku, along with Netflix, Hulu and HBO Now. For more cutting edge video, he streams from Vessel.

A favorite app is the hyper-localized weather and rain predicting app Dark Sky, “which is extremely useful” when hiking or deciding to hold practice for his son’s baseball team.
