Jamie Mottram

Director of Content Development,
USA TODAY Sports Media Group

Jamie Mottram works from Wilmington for a division of Gannett, the largest U.S. newspaper publisher. “I create and develop new content properties aimed at rapid audience and revenue growth,” he said about his digital-focused job.

From the time he wakes up to when he goes to sleep, Mottram is the ultimate media consumer. "Music is a constant – in the house, on a jog, at my computer, in the car – thanks to Spotify. My phone is always handy and usually burning through its brief battery life thanks to heavy use of Twitter, Instagram, Apple’s Podcasts app, email, Slack, Google Hangouts and SMS. Sometimes I even make a call," he said. "For TV it’s DirecTV plus Netflix plus HBO GO. (I probably watch too much TV.) And finally, for reading when I go to bed at night, it’s the Pocket app on my iPad."

In print, his picks have dwindled. “I don’t really read newspapers or magazines anymore, unless I’m on the road and they’re handy. The Washington Post is my paper of record, and of course I have an affinity for USA TODAY.”

But while online, he regularly checks out Grantland, and For The Win “is one I created at Gannett and hold near-and-dear.” Aquarium Drunkard is his favorite music blog; and D.C. Sports Bog his favorite sports blog. The Awl’s The Content Wars series “is great for a progressive view of digital media.”

Go-to podcasts include Grantland’s Hollywood Prospectus and NPR’s Fresh Air. "WTF with Marc Maron gets A-plus guests for longform interviews," he said. “The Digiday Podcast is interesting for those in my world. And a newer one I really like is Song Exploder – recommended for music fans.”

Other app picks include “RunKeeper (for jogging), Snapchat (for staying young), WeatherBug (for not getting rained on), Nuzzel (for finding great reads), Google Maps (for getting there), USA TODAY Sports app (for must-see game alerts) and a bunch of other ones, probably.”
