Dan Tynan

Editor-in-chief,
Yahoo Tech

(Editor’s note: Former Wilmington resident Dan Tynan returned to the Port City earlier this month to participate in the Cucalorus Connect conference.)

Asked how he uses technology on a daily basis, Tynan says, “I edit a website about technology, so it’s easier to detail the few instances where I don’t use tech in my life. Sleeping, for example – blissfully tech free (since I lost the charger to my Jawbone Up, anyway). I also have a relatively low-tech bicycle, though that may change.”

Reads most news online from a range of sources, “depending on the news of the moment. But The New York Times always factors in, as does The New Yorker, Rolling Stone and Wired.”

As for favorite websites, “Well, YahooTech.com. Duh. I procrastinate by writing snarky answers to questions at Quora.com. I spend a lot of time on Twitter and Facebook.”

Currently alternating between season one of Gotham and BoJack Horseman on Netflix.

Reading Game of Thrones right now, “I am pleasantly surprised at how well written it is. And rereading Billy Collins (my favorite poet).”

Counts The Martian among recent movie picks. “Bridge of Spies was terrific – definite Best Picture material. Despite a truly cheesy marketing campaign, Inside Out is a profound and deeply moving film. I am looking forward to seeing Trumbo.”

Now in San Francisco, Tynan relies on transportation apps such as Embark for train schedules, “Lyft to call for a ride and RunPee during especially long movies. The Yahoo Weather and News Digest apps are also good (and yes, I would say that even if I didn’t work for Yahoo.)”

As for digital device recommendations: “Too many. Go read a book instead.”
