Westin Hotel Planned On Military Cutoff Road

By Cece Nunn, posted Jan 9, 2017
The Westin is coming to Wilmington.

The hotel is planned for 347 Military Cutoff Road, expected to open in 2021, according to a listing for The Westin Wilmington on a Starwood Hotels & Resorts Inc. website.

Westin Hotels & Resorts is part of Starwood, which merged with Marriott International in September.

The 10-acre property at 347 Military Cutoff Road in Wilmington where the hotel is planned is listed as a pending sale on the N.C. Commercial Multiple Listing Service, with a price tag of $8.5 million. The listing agent is Spruill Thompson of Wilmington-based Cape Fear Commercial, according to the NCCMSL.

The only Westin currently in North Carolina is located in Charlotte, according to the Starwood website, which in addition to Wilmington also lists two other upcoming Westin hotels planned for North Carolina, in Greensboro (203 S. Elm St.) and Raleigh (The Westin Raleigh Crabtree Valley, 4501 Creedmoor Road), with expected 2019 openings.

An upscale hotel brand, Westin Hotels & Resorts has more than 200 hotels and resorts in nearly 40 countries and territories, according to marketing materials.

"The Westin brand has a reputation for excellence that is renowned and will serve to enhance our existing full-service hotel offerings, especially if it offers meeting space that can accommodate larger groups," said Connie Nelson of the Wilmington and Beaches Convention & Visitors Bureau. "The fact that the proposed hotel is conveniently located close to the beach will appeal to meeting planners and leisure travelers."

In Wilmington at the end of October, a Greensboro-based real estate development and management firm bought more than 30 acres nearby at 565 Military Cutoff Road for $4 million via a limited liability company called 347 MCO.

The buyer, The Carroll Companies, plans to use the 565 Military Cutoff Road property, currently home to a mobile home park, to create a high-end mixed-use development named The Avenue.
