State Declares That Surf’s Up With Resolution

By Staff Reports, posted Aug 25, 2016

A Wrightsville Beach Museum of History board member recently got the state to declare September the month to hit the waves.

Skipper Funderburg, a local surfing historian and new board member for the museum, applied for the state to proclaim September as Surfing Month for North Carolina.

The proclamation came through, according to a recent news release from the museum, 303 W. Salisbury St. It will be presented at the
upcoming Waterman Hall of Fame Ceremony in late September.

“The museum understands the importance of water sports to the culture and history of Wrightsville Beach. The first permanent structure on the island was the Carolina Yacht Club building in 1854,” the release stated.

Details of the Waterman Hall of Fame Ceremony are expected to be released in early September.
