Fall Festivals, Events Entice Visitors

By Sherri Parrish Crawford, posted Sep 25, 2015
With events focused on interests from hot rods to haute art, tourists and locals, alike, are expected to be out in full force this fall.

Port City Rumble: In its ninth year, the Port City Rumble pulls in to downtown Wilmington on Oct. 10.

Featuring modified cars and motorcycles, hot rods and more, the annual event will be located along Princess Street between Front and Third streets. Related activities and live music will coincide with the car show at various downtown venues.

Among the events, according to the event Facebook page, is the “downhill death defying creeper race.” Additionally, an awards ceremony will be held for vehicles in a variety of categories.

The car show itself will also display vehicles that are classified as American classics, antiques, rat rods and customs.

Art in the Arboretum: Another long-standing annual event in the Port City, Art in the Arboretum melds art and nature.

A seasonal showcase of the visual and performing arts, the three-day event begins on Oct. 2 at the New Hanover County Arboretum on Oleander Drive. From exhibits and artist demonstrations to kid’s activities and live music, this year’s art show and sale will also feature an artist competition.

Riverfest: A classic Wilmington festival, Riverfest turns 37 this October.

Slated annually for the first weekend in October, the event celebrates the Cape Fear region’s history and culture. Officials estimate that the three-day event draws “nearly a quarter million people” as attendees.

“Although the yearly festival is dependent on sponsorships and donations from community businesses and organizations, the economic impact of Riverfest for Historic Downtown and the surrounding community has been estimated at over three million dollars,” according to the event website.

Festival pulls include a street fair with craft and food vendors, live music, races – including the Great Waiters Wine Race – a fireworks display and more. New for this year is the inaugural Miss Riverfest Competition.
