Memorial Ocean Swim Takes Place In May

By Susan Hance, posted May 9, 2014
The inaugural Stoked to Go Out, Grey Liston memorial swim will bring competitors to Wrightsville Beach on May 17, organizers said.

The swim will take place between Johnnie Mercer’s Pier and Crystal Pier, totaling a distance of just under two miles.

It is a span of the Atlantic that Liston swam many times as a member of the University of North Carolina Wilmington swim team and where he stood watch as a Wrightsville Beach lifeguard.

Proceeds will benefit the Grey Liston Memorial Scholarship Fund and the UNCW Swimming and Diving Scholarship Fund. Liston died in a mountaineering accident last year in Olympic National Park, according to the race’s website.
