Area Attractions Shifting To Summer Hours On Memorial Day

By Sasha Johnson, posted May 28, 2010

This weekend, the Memorial Day holiday ushers in the summer months and that means new hours for some of the area’s attractions.

Family-friendly attractions open during regular business hours over the holiday weekend include the NC Aquarium at Fort Fisher, the Cameron Art Museum (although the Museum is closed Mondays), and the Battleship North Carolina. The Battleship will be featuring its traditional Memorial Day Observance service on Monday at 5:45 p.m. Presentations will include a military guest speaker, an all-service Color Guard, a 21-gun salute by a Marine Corps Honor Guard, a military band, Taps, and a memorial wreath cast onto the waters. Admission to the service is free.

Friday, May 28 New Hanover County government employees will be taking mandatory leave as all non-emergency offices close for a furlough day. Offices will also be closed Monday, May 31 in observance of Memorial Day. This will be the final furlough for the current fiscal year. The Cape Fear Museum of History and Science will be closed to the public Friday, but will re-open Saturday and be open for Memorial Day.

Summer Hours (Memorial Day through Labor Day):

Battleship North Carolina: 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily
Cameron Art Museum: 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday-Sunday and every Thursday until 9 p.m.
Cape Fear Museum of History and Science: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday-Saturday and 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday
NC Aquarium at Fort Fisher: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily
