By Staff Reports, posted Oct 18, 2019

The Innovation category honors an individual or team behind a new scientific discovery, procedure, treatment or device that can save lives or improve the quality of life for a large number of people.

JENEAN LACORTE

TITLE: Para-Medical Tattoo Artist
ORGANIZATION: Restorative Tattoos
WHAT THE NOMINATORS SAID:
“Jenean has been an amazing asset to our community for a long time; however, in the last year her time, talent and passion has shown to be unprecedented. “A year or so ago knowing Jenean was an amazing artist I contacted her to do a project for a young heart patient. I thought having an American Girl doll with a similar scar for her upcoming surgery would be a great gift. I contacted Jenean and without hesitation she agreed eagerly to make this little girl’s dream come true … Whether fixing a customized baby doll for a little girl or changing women’s lives through amazing nipple tattoos, she works daily to better the lives and confidence of her clients daily. We are so fortunate to have Jenean available to our patients, family and friends.”

- Alexis Passingham

“As a friend and a client of Jenean LaCorte’s, I have seen her dedication to providing an excellent service for an important skill in our small community. I’ve always known she was a wonderful artist, so when she told me about what she wanted to do I knew she would excel at it. She has been dedicated to finding a clientele that needs her services in a way that will change their lives.”

BRIAN LANIER

TITLE: President and Founder
ORGANIZATION: Promina Health- Direct Primary Care
WHAT THE NOMINATORS SAID:
“The direct primary care model that Dr. Lanier has introduced to this community is so beneficial to his patients. It is changing the model of how physicians interact with their patients by spending quality time with each patient instead of having to rush through a visit. His goal is to improve the health of his patients and improve their quality of life.”

- Danielle Nicholson

“Dr. Lanier provides an innovative and affordable model of direct primary care that puts his patients at the forefront. He forgoes traditional insurance, which allows him to focus on the most important customer, his patient. He can spend as much time as needed to help his patient, including providing low-cost medications and free procedures within his office … knowing that I have him there for anything I need is a great feeling!”

- Nicholas Marki
MORE INFORMATION:
Promina Health opened its doors in 2017 in Wilmington and is making inroads in the medical community by offering a direct primary care model.

Lanier said patients appreciate the model, which Lanier likens to memberships offered at gyms and fitness centers.

JOSEPH PINO

TITLES: Executive Director, South East Area Health Education Center; Associate Dean and Campus Director, UNC School of Medicine Wilmington Campus; Vice-President of Graduate Medical Education, NHRMC
ORGANIZATIONS: NHRMC and East Area Health Education Center
WHAT THE NOMINATOR SAID:
“Over his career, Dr. Joseph Pino has built a strong reputation in leadership and innovation in healthcare. This past year in particular, he helped create an innovative approach to develop the next generation of leaders across the healthcare community, and ultimately help shape the future of patient care.

“Dr. Pino initiated and co-designed a highly innovative approach to leadership development called the Healthcare Provider Leadership Program. The program offers a group of 30 high-potential providers a unique opportunity to grow as leaders while developing plans to further strengthen patient care. These leaders include attending physicians, well-regarded directors and providers, as well as a select number of residents and medical students. The group is organized into smaller teams, and each team oversees a medical practice such as Family Medicine, OB/GYN and Women’s Health, Neurology, Cardiology, Trauma Surgery, and others.”
