Announcing The 2016 Health Care Heroes Award Winners

The 2016 Health Care Heroes awards took place Saturday night at the Hilton Wilmington Riverside.

More than 350 attended the event, which is in its fourth year, to recognize providers and volunteers in nine categories spanning a range of health care fields in the Wilmington area.

For the awards, a panel of judges reviewed nominations from the community and Business Journal readers to pick the category finalists and winners.

A special award for Lifetime Achievement went to Henry Hawthorne, a longtime pediatrician who even in retirement continues to impact the health care community through his work with Community Care of Lower Cape Fear.

This year’s winners, announced at the event, were:

Health Care Heroes: First Responder
Sarah Rivenbark, Community paramedic at NHRMC

Health Care Heroes: Health Care Executive
Ruth Glaser, President of Pender Memorial Hospital

Health Care Heroes: Health Care Professional
Mary Rudyk, Physician at Senior Health Center

Health Care Heroes: Innovation
David Smith, Pediatric intensivist at Coastal Children’s Services

Health Care Heroes: Nurse
Cindy Edgell, Director of nursing for The Davis Community

Health Care Heroes: Nurse Practitioner/Physician Assistant
Mary Beth Koehler, Child medical examiner provider for The Carousel Center Inc.

Health Care Heroes: Physician
William McNulty, Medical oncologist with NHRMC Physician Group-Cape Fear Cancer Specialists

Health Care Heroes: Volunteer
Wendy Knapp, Purchasing coordinator for Wilmington Health
