BIZTALK: Novant Health's NHRMC Proposal

By Vicky Janowski, posted Apr 30, 2020
Shelbourn Stevens, president and COO of Novant Health Brunswick Medical Center, spoke on Thursday's BizTalk about Novant’s proposal for New Hanover Regional Medical Center.

Winston-Salem-based Novant Health was one of six health systems that submitted pitches to either buy NHRMC or partner with the county-owned hospital, offering the county up to $2 billion to acquire the hospital.

“It’s really about their quality. It’s a high quality, and we respect the work that the county and the leadership there have done. So when we looked at all the assets and everything, it came in around $1.5 [billion],” Stevens said. “And so when we looked at the different options, we wanted to put out a competitive bid out there because we feel that together with Novant Brunswick Medical Center and New Hanover Regional and all of their affiliates, we would create a really, really strong health care system for Southeastern North Carolina.”

Novant Health's proposal also addressed a number of other areas, from funding future NHRMC's strategic capital projects needs to raising NHRMC's charity care eligibility requirement from 200% to 300% of the federal poverty level for patients. Novant also said it would be open to other types of partnership models such as a joint venture, joint operating company or management services agreement instead of a purchase.

Ken Haynes, president of the greater Charlotte region for Atrium Health, which also submitted a proposal, is scheduled to appear on BizTalk next Thursday. Requests have been sent to the four other responding health systems.
