Rountree Named Pink Ribbon Angel

By Jenny Callison, posted Sep 30, 2013

The New Hanover Regional Medical Center Foundation has named Sylvia Rountree as the 2013 Pink Ribbon Angel Award recipient in recognition of her generous support and commitment to improving cancer care in the greater Wilmington community.

She will be recognized at the 16th annual NHRMC Foundation’s Pink luncheon and evening cocktail party Thursday. Proceeds from the events will provide free mammograms and diagnostics for women without insurance or resources to pay for them, Comfort Bags to women newly diagnosed with cancer, and the Healing Arts Program at NHRMC to provide complementary therapies. For tickets and information, call 815-5002 or visit www.nhrmcfoundation.org.

Rountree and her husband George have been generous supporters of NHRMC for many years, concentrating on patient care areas of the hospital and making a significant gift to the original Zimmer Cancer Center building campaign, the foundation stated in a news release. The release stated also that, for the past 15 years, Rountree has been a sponsor of the Pink Ribbon Luncheon, and in 2006 established a fund at the NHRMC Foundation.

Because of the Rountrees’ generosity, 1,505 uninsured women with cancer have received more than 3,800 prescriptions they may not have been able to afford otherwise.

Both Rountree and her daughter Gina are cancer survivors.
