New Hanover Regional Medical Center’s Zimmer Cancer Center is a participant in a new national program to help cancer survivors make the transition from active treatment to post-treatment care.
The program was developed by The Wellness Community and The Lance Armstrong Foundation. The Cancer Transitions program was created to bridge the gap between cancer treatment and life following cancer, hospital officials said.
Five sessions will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. beginning Tuesday, Sept. 28 in the Lighthouse Café located in the Betty H. Cameron Women’s & Children’s Hospital, on the 17th Street campus of New Hanover Regional Medical Center.
The sessions will feature expert panelists and include doctors, nutritionists and fitness experts who will discuss various topics. The topics will include specialized nutrition after cancer treatment, the need for continued emotional and social support and the medical effect of cancer treatment and long-term medical management.
The program is offered free of charge. It “will provide local cancer survivors with information and tools to make the transition into living a full and productive life as a survivor,” LaSonia Melvin, community outreach director of the Carolina Well program at NHRMC, said in a prepared statement.
