Pathology Lab Gets CAP Re-accreditation

By Ken Little, posted Oct 30, 2009

Wilmington Pathology Laboratory was recently awarded re-accreditation by the Accreditation Committee of the College of American Pathologists.

CAP awarded the re-accreditation based on the results of an on-site inspection of the laboratory, 1915 S. 17th St., Wilmington.

Laboratory director Dr. Brian C. Shiro was congratulated by CAP for the “excellence of the services being provided.” Wilmington Pathology Laboratory, Inc., is one of nearly 7,000 CAP-accredited laboratories nationwide.

The CAP Laboratory Accreditation Program was started in the early 1960s and is recognized by the federal government as being equal to or more stringent than the government’s own inspection program, lab administrators said.

During the CAP accreditation process, inspectors examine a laboratory’s records and quality control of procedures for the preceding two years. CAP inspectors also examine staff qualifications, laboratory equipment, facilities, safety program and record, in addition to the overall management of the laboratory.

Wilmington Pathology Laboratory was founded in 1976 and began serving New Hanover County as a hospital-based group at New Hanover Regional Medical Center. It has grown to provide pathology services for Cape Fear Memorial Hospital, Wilmington SurgCare, Atlantic SurgiCenter, Pender Memorial Hospital, Brunswick Community Hospital and many independent physician practices.
