The town of Leland could soon be annexing a little over 150 acres.

At tonight's Leland Town Council meeting, officials will consider a resolution directing the town clerk to investigate a voluntary annexation petition for 150.6 acres off U.S. 74-76, near the Compass Pointe master-planned community.

The property is owned by WGTRACT6 LLC and WGTRACT10B, entities managed by Nathan Sanders of Wilmington.

According to a memo in the council meeting's agenda, "Pursuant to N.C.G.S. §160A-31, upon receipt of a valid petition signed by all of the owners of real property in the area described therein, a city may annex an area contiguous to its primary corporate limits. N.C.G.S. §160A-31 provides that the sufficiency of an annexation petition shall be investigated by the Town Clerk before further annexation proceedings may take place."

The memo mentions a state law that halted some of Leland's annexation efforts.

"This annexation moratorium does not apply to voluntary annexation petitions that had been executed by the petitioner on or before March 1, 2023," the memo states. "The town of Leland received the annexation petition from the property owners on June 17, 2022."

No site plans accompanied the annexation request.

"At this time, they have only submitted a voluntary annexation petition," stated Ben Andrea, the town of Leland's director of planning and inspections, in an email Monday.

The town's staff has recommended that the council adopt the resolution. The Leland Town Council meeting is set to take place at 6:30 tonight at Leland Town Hall, 102 Town Hall Drive.
