Startup Could Get State Grant Funds For Manufacturing Facility

By Christina Haley O'Neal, posted Nov 13, 2017
An agricultural business looking to establish itself in the Leland Industrial Park could receive more than $183,000 in state and county economic incentives to outfit a manufacturing facility.

ITI Technologies Inc. plans to establish a facility inside an existing building located at 2080 Enterprise Drive, in the Leland Industrial Park, according to a notice of a public hearing from the Brunswick County Board of Commissioners.

“They're a relatively new company here,” said Mike Hargett, director of economic development and planning for the county. “They are a manufacturing company … they have three primary products: mineral water additive for livestock feeding, soil remediation product and fertilizer enhancer.”

The project is eligible for $175,000 in funds from a Building Reuse Grant from the N.C. Department of Commerce, Rural Development Division. The grant requires a 5 percent match from Brunswick County, Hargett said, which is a total local match of $8,750.

"The grant funds, including the local match provided by the county, will be reimbursed for a portion of the improvements cost incurred by the company," Hargett said in an email.

The space the company is looking to renovate at the Leland Industrial Park is about 48,000 square feet, Hargett said. Separately, ITI Technologies Inc. is in the process of renovating some office space in the building, he said, which would not use any of the state or county funds.

ITI Technologies must invest nearly $3.6 million in property, building renovations, machinery and equipment, according to the notice. The company must also create 35 new, full-time jobs in the county with an average annual wage of $65,133. The company would have until Jan. 1, 2020 to fulfill the requirements.

Hargett the company has a couple of people employed at this time, he said.

“It is a startup business. They have had a presence here for some time,” Hargett said. “I believe they have been doing some product development, actually utilizing some resources at UNCW for lab work and doing their staging here and so forth."

Plans call for the improvements in late December or early 2018, and "they would be hiring people soon thereafter," Hargett said.

The Brunswick County Board of Commissioners will hold a public hearing on the proposal Nov. 20.
