Saffo, Blair Unopposed For Mayor Posts As Candidate Filing Ends

By Jenny Callison, posted Jul 17, 2015
Wilmington mayor Bill Saffo and Wrightsville Beach mayor Bill Blair will be unopposed on the November ballot as they seek new terms in office, according to information on the New Hanover County Board of Elections website Friday.

By the deadline at noon Friday, a total of 28 area residents had filed to run for municipal offices in New Hanover County, the board of elections website shows.

In the other two mayoral races, incumbents will have competition. Bob Lewis is challenging Carolina Beach mayor Dan Wilcox, while Emilie Swearingen is running against Kure Beach mayor Dean Lambeth.

There will be only two names on the ballot for the two open seats on Wrightsville Beach’s Board of Aldermen. Current members Elizabeth King and Darryl Mills are seeking re-election to their posts.

The Wilmington City Council has three open seats, and eight individuals vying for them. Candidates are Neil Anderson, Hollis Briggs Jr., Debra Hays, Margaret Haynes, Paul Lawler, Frank Madonna, John Presswood and Alvin Rogers. Anderson and Haynes are current council members seeking second terms.

Nine candidates have filed to run for two open seats on the Carolina Beach Town Council. They are Patrick Boykin, Michael Bridges, Tom Elicson, Sarah Friede, Tammy Hanson, Lonnie Lashley, T.D. Scaringi, Steve Shuttleworth and Steve Wright. Friede and Shuttleworth are the incumbents.

The town of Kure Beach has three candidates for two available seats on its town council. John Ellen, David Heglar and Joseph Whitley will vie for Heglar’s seat and that of Swearingen, who is challenging Lambeth for mayor.
