A facility for the primary charitable beneficiary of the Wells Fargo Championship golf tournament is nearing completion, according to a news release Tuesday from Wilmington city officials.

Scheduled to open May 2, the First Tee of Greater Wilmington's three-hole short course and practice green has been built along the ninth fairway at the Wilmington Municipal Golf Course. The First Tee is also adding a new chipping green by the first hole, new tees at the ninth hole and new sod in the ninth-hole fairway, according to the release.

The facility's scheduled opening coincides with the Wells Fargo Championship, to be held May 1-7 at Eagle Point Golf Club in Wilmington.

The First Tee is a nationwide nonprofit organization that provides educational programs for local youth through the game of golf. The local First Tee is a public-private partnership, with the city providing the land and the program’s board raising more than $1 million for the new facility, which Wilmington City Council members toured on Tuesday, the release said.

Wilmington Mayor Bill Saffo said in the release, “This is what a true [public-private] partnership looks like; it’s good for our community and especially good for our kids.”

First Tee of Greater Wilmington plans to serve 25,000 children in the three-county area by 2019, officials said.
