Galifianakis Movie Could Film Partially In Wilmington

By Meg Garner, posted May 30, 2014
A film starring Zach Galifianakis, Owen Wilson and Kristen Wiig might include production time in Wilmington, according to industry reports.

The Relativity Media film, being called Untitled Armored Car Project, is set to begin production in July and will potentially film for a couple of weeks in Wilmington, according to the local film industry blog Wilmywood Daily, which posted a copy of an ad calling for crew members.

Bill Vassar, executive vice president of EUE/Screen Gems Studios, said Friday he had no comment about whether the film is coming to the Cape Fear area.

He did say the production team had spoken to people in Asheville, Winston Salem and Wilmington, though no final talks have started.

“It’s at least coming to North Carolina, so that’s good,” Vassar said.

Johnny Griffin, director of the Wilmington Regional Film Commission, also said Friday that no details about the project have been released yet.

The announcement posted Thursday on Wilmywood Daily stated that offices for the film had opened in Asheville where production would primarily take place, and that the production team is currently accepting resumes for crew members.

Danny McBride is listed as one of the film’s writers. McBride spent time in Wilmington, filming his HBO show Eastbound and Down before it ended in 2013.

Untitled Armored Car Project will center on the true story of how an armored car driver and vault supervisor pulled off one of the largest heists in U.S. history, according to the crew announcement.
