An event coming next week aims to recognize the economic impact of minority- and women-owned businesses. 

UNCW's Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, in partnership with UNCW's Office of Institutional Diversity and Inclusion, is hosting the Virtual Cape Fear Region Minority Enterprise Development Week from Monday to Saturday next week, Oct. 5-10.

In addition to recognition, according to a news release, the event  promotes the growth and success of these firms by providing avenues for networking, educational workshops and business development. 

"This year, Cape Fear MED Week expands its reach into the community by partnering with more organizations to offer more than 20 sessions, including attracting customers post COVID-19 and learning how to become an effective leader," the release stated "There are also sessions for Latinx and women business leaders and entrepreneurs."

Heather McWhorter, regional director at the mall Business & Technology Development Center (SBTDC) at the University of North Carolina Wilmington, said, "MED Week provides minority and women entrepreneurs with the tools and connections for success. During this unique, weeklong celebration there is something for everyone – whether you are thinking about starting a business, improving your leadership skills, or taking your successful business to the next level.

She said in an email Friday that partners have worked throughout the year to bring the critical event to the region.

"In southeast NC, business ownership rates among minorities and women are lower than national averages," McWhorter wrote. "This is one way that partners are working together to ensure that everyone has an opportunity to succeed."
