Search For New CFCC President Still Not Started

It's been three months since the previous Cape Fear Community College president's resignation was announced, and as of Thursday morning, a search for a new president had not been initiated by the school's Board of Trustees.

The topic might come up tonight, when the board meets at 5 p.m., though a discussion on any potential presidential search is not specifically mentioned on the meeting's agenda. Former president Amanda Lee's resignation took effect Dec. 31, and the interim president is Jim Morton.

"I'm certain tonight at the board meeting, the board will discuss it," said Board of Trustees member Jimmy Hopkins.

At a BOT meeting in October, when the announcement about Lee was made, Morton was appointed to serve as acting president through Dec. 31, after which he became interim president. His appointment means CFCC has had three top leaders in six years: Ted Spring, whose departure resulted in a lawsuit that was settled last year, was appointed in 2012, and Lee was appointed after Spring left in 2015.

Since the October Board of Trustees meeting, it has been unclear when a search would take place for a new president.

"In regards to your question about the Presidential Search process, the Board has not taken action on a search as of today," CFCC spokeswoman Rachel Nadeau said in an email Thursday morning.

In response to the question, "Does CFCC have published qualifications for the president's job or for potential president candidates?" Nadeau wrote in an email Wednesday, "In regards to the question about job qualifications, those are not established until a position is officially posted. CFCC uses PeopleAdmin as our applicant tracking system, and all job postings would be posted online through that system, similar to how all our current jobs are posted online."

Nadeau provided the advertisement that was used in the 2015 presidential search. Under required qualifications, the ad states, "An earned Doctorate degree from an accredited institution required." It also says, "Minimum of four years senior level community college administrative experience required, North Carolina experience preferred."

Morton was finance director of Wilmington International Airport for 15 years before becoming vice president of business and financial services at CFCC in 2015, later being named executive vice president, according to his biographical information on CFCC's website.

Morton attended the University of North Carolina Wilmington and holds a bachelor’s degree in marketing from the UNCW Cameron School of Business, the website says.
