The New Hanover County Department of Social Services (DSS) named Michelle Winstead as its director earlier this month, according to a news release.
 
Winstead had been interim director of DSS since February, after having joined the department as an assistant director last September.
 
Winstead has 22 years of experience in the health and human services field in North Carolina, including time as DSS director in Warren County.
