The Calico Room has experienced a full renovation under the new ownership of Mary Missigman.

Missigman purchased the business at the end of July and took over the lease of the 3,000-square-foot building at 107 S. Front St. on Aug. 1.

An event planner and bar manager from the Washington, D.C., area, Missigman wants the new Calico Room to be a music venue, art gallery and bar. The venue will feature live music nightly and a rotating schedule of open mic nights, karaoke and other special events. The work of local artists will be displayed, also on a rotating basis.

“This space works so well both for music and art,” Missigman said. “I really want to showcase local and North Carolina artists as far as our musical talent and artwork, and the same goes for our beverages as well."

The bar is heavy on North Carolina craft brews and specialty cocktails, with specials changing nightly. The Calico Room offers several varieties of North Carolina-made moonshine, which bartenders are using in their craft cocktails.

The Calico Room can accommodate about 170 guests and has a small outdoor seating area as well as a room for private events.

“We’ve really made some great improvements to the furniture and lounge area,” Missigman said. “I think people will find it really inviting.”
