On Tuesday, the Carolina Beach Road location of Biggers Market opened for the season.

“We are excited to open with our local flowers and herbs that always kick it off, as well as our local asparagus, which is my personal favorite. And strawberries are starting to come in, so we are getting back into it,” said Andrew Cameron, one of the partners in the produce and plant business.

Potted plants, herbs, small containers of flowers and hanging baskets are in full supply at the market, 6458 Carolina Beach Road, in addition to mostly regional produce until the summer gets local sources stocked.

In the off-season, the crew at Biggers Market moved and expanded their initial Market Street location, which took up a lot of time and energy, but now Cameron is ready to focus on the Carolina Beach space.

“It is not a matter of getting out of vacation mode this year; it is just putting the other shoe on,” Cameron said.

Cameron said he is excited to see the familiar faces returning to the market (formerly called Port City Produce) before the rush of tourist season.

“This time of year, it’s always fun when it is a lot of the locals. About 80% of our customers are returning locals,” Cameron said.

Upon this new season, Cameron plans to “be more diligent about social media marketing.”

“It has never been my strong point, and it’s so important in this day and age, so I’m learning the ins and outs of that as a part of the business and working towards being better at it,” Cameron said.

Other technological facets of the business have already gotten an upgrade at Biggers Market to ensure safety and productivity. They updated their forklifts and gotten bigger trucks.

“We stepped up the logistical side of the business, so we can get the produce in faster and to the consumer more effectively and in a safer manner, too,” Cameron said. “It’s the same great service and produce, just streamlined and more efficient.”
Biggers is “one big happy family,” according to Cameron, who says their smaller operation works hard to “keep up with our big brother on the other side of town.”

Biggers Market is open Monday-Friday 9 a.m.-6:30 p.m., Saturdays 8 a.m.-6:30 p.m., and Sundays 10 a.m.-6 p.m.
