A Chase Bank is proposed on the site of the former Talbots store at Hanover Center in Wilmington, according to city records.

The proposed project would include the removal of the current building at 3607 Oleander Drive and the development of an approximately 3,400-square-foot Chase Bank with a drive-thru ATM, according to a major site plan application submitted to the city of Wilmington late last week.

The branch would be the latest Wilmington-area location in the works for JPMorgan Chase. The New York-based financial institution submitted plans last spring for a branch at the former Wild Wing Cafe site at 1331 Military Cutoff Road in Landfall Shopping Center, and another location is under construction at the corner of U.S. 17 and Ravenswood Drive in Hampstead.

The Hampstead branch is expected to open at the end of the year, according to Ani Rodriguez, a communications associate at JPMorgan Chase. Additional branches in the Wilmington market, including the Military Cutoff Road location, are expected to open in 2027.

"We’re planning more locations in the market, but we’re not able to share details on those sites at this time," Rodriguez wrote in an email to the Business Journal on Monday.

The bank considered customer demand, along with business and population growth, when deciding to grow in the Wilmington market, she added.

Talbots, a women’s clothing retailer, closed its doors in the Hanover Center space in July 2022, according to past Business Journal reporting. The national chain operates a store at 6848 Main St. in Mayfaire Town Center.

A description of the new project states that it would include the “redevelopment of a portion of the overall parcel," and along with the construction of the bank building, it would include “associated improvements” to the parking lot, site lighting, utility services and landscape.

Hanover Center is owned in a joint venture between Harbour Retail Partners and Perform Properties. A representative declined to comment on the proposed project on Monday.

The area around Hanover Center is home to several bank branches, including Bank of America, Truist, First Bank and PNC Bank.
