Where can area families and young people learn to be smarter about money? At the New Hanover County Public Library.
Saturday, in celebration of national Money Smart Week, the library’s main branch will host an afternoon of special programs for children, teens and families, a news release from the library stated.
According to the release, Saturday’s activities consist of a Money Habitudes card game geared for teenagers from 14-18; the play Stone Soup, presented by Rags to Riches Theater for younger children and their parents; a rap approach to financial education, aimed at ages 10 and older; and opportunities for attendees to interact through puppets, costumes and games about money.
Popcorn, pizza and other refreshments will be available all afternoon, the release stated.
On Monday at 6 p.m., Wilmington resident Syble Solomon, an expert in the field of spending psychology and the author of the Money Habitudes cards, will lead a workshop at the public library’s Northeast branch.
The workshop, The Elephant Made Me Do It, will help participants recognize what motivates their personal financial choices and get help taming any self-defeating habits that are affecting their credit ratings.
All the Money Smart Week programs are free of charge but space for some is limited. To learn more and to register, visit http://nhcpl.libguides.com/moneysmart

The week’s events at the New Hanover County Public Library are funded by a grant from the FINRA Investor Education Foundation as part of a partnership with the American Library Association, the release stated. New Hanover County Public Library was one of 17 public libraries nationwide chosen to receive a grant from the FINRA Investor Education Foundation this year.
