The Wilmington Chamber of Commerce this week announced key new hires and an award earned by its Career and Leadership Development Academy (CLDA).
The academy received the 2024 Association in Leadership Programs (ALP) Excellence in Innovation Award, according to a news release. The award was presented during the ALP National Conference, held August 5-8, in Providence, Rhode Island.
"The Excellence in Innovation Award celebrates outstanding creativity, uniqueness, and impact within community leadership programs. The Career and Leadership Development Academy was selected for its groundbreaking approach to bridging the gap between traditional education and real-world career preparation, directly addressing the critical need for a skilled workforce in the Wilmington," a release stated.
Lura Hammond, executive director of the ALP, stated in the release, "The CLDA exemplifies the kind of innovative thinking and impactful programming that drives positive change in communities. Their work not only prepares students for future success but also strengthens the bonds between education, industry, and community."
Laura Brogdon-Primavera, vice president of leadership development at the Wilmington Chamber of Commerce, stated in the release, "It is very rewarding to know that all the hard work we have put in to growing this program, securing necessary funding and working with industry partners is making an impact on our community locally and influencing others across the country. This award is a testament to the i
mportance of growing some key industries here in Wilmington. There is still more work to be done to continue enhancing the program and ensuring it continues for all future 7th grade students in New Hanover County Schools.”
Growing the CLDA program to include all 7th grade students in the New Hanover County school district meant n
eeding additional support to make it a successful year for the expanded program, according to the release. As a result, the chamber has welcomed Jacki Booth
(pictured at left) and Margaret Gorman
(pictured at right) as managers of leadership programs.
With experience in community engagement and education, Booth will oversee the CLDA. "Her background in instructional strategies and technical management will greatly benefit our initiatives," the release stated.
Gorman brings over 25 years of leadership development experience, including work with Fortune 500 clients.
"With a PhD in Executive Leadership, she will enhance our Talent and Leadership Programs, contributing her extensive expertise to the Chamber's mission," according to the release.
