Chris May has received the Order of the Long Leaf Pine award from Gov. Roy Cooper, according to a news release.

May is the former executive director of the Cape Fear Council of Governments (CFCOG), who retired at the end of July. He was presented the award during a celebration held in his honor at the University of North Carolina Wilmington Clock Tower Lounge in late July, officials said in the release.

"The Order of the Long Leaf Pine is among the most prestigious awards conferred by the Governor of North Carolina. It is awarded to persons for exemplary service to the State of North Carolina and their communities that is above and beyond the call of duty and which has made a significant impact and strengthened North Carolina," stated the release.

May previously worked for Watauga County, Seven Devils and Blowing Rock, before joining the CFCOG as executive director in 2001.

He has also worked as an adjunct professor for public administration at Appalachian State University and as a guest lecturer for the UNCW's Master of Public Administration program.

He is serving as chair on the community advisory board for UNCW's Public Administration master's program.

May also served 40 years in the U.S. Coast Guard Reserve, and retired as a commander and senior reserve officer for Coast Guard operations in the state. He is certified as a Coast Guard marine safety and environmental protection professional.

He holds an associate's degree from Lees-McRae College. He earned a bachelor's degree and master's degrees in political science and public administration from Appalachian State University.
