Local Kids Café Wins System Award

By Jenny Callison, posted May 12, 2015
Wilmington’s Kids Café is the recipient of the Community-Based Award from the Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina, the organization announced in a news release.

WRAAP (Wilmington’s Residential Adolescent Achievement Place Inc.) “continuously engages the community through workshops, meetings and engages countless community partners such as UNCW and Cape Fear Community College,” the release stated. “More than 55 local students have given their time, together with other volunteers, to mentor and tutor children in the program.”

The award carried a cash prize of $1,000.

WRAAP, like other Kids Café programs sponsored by the Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina, is an after-school program that offers tutoring, nutrition education, mentoring, and nutritious meals to children at risk of hunger, as well as a safe and positive after-school environment for children ages 15 and under, the release stated. Kids Cafe provides a safe and positive environment for children ages 15 and under to gather after school.

The Food Bank currently supports 26 Kids Cafe programs at 32 sites in 25 counties, which together serve approximately 1,700 children.
